I firmly believe that if you are excited about food and cooking, and you’re not limited by too many specific dietary restrictions, you should be willing to try anything. To that end, when I go out to a restaurant, and I trust that the cooks know what they’re doing, I actively seek out interesting, weird, or different things on the menu.
For example, the last two things that really jumped out at me at a few recent dining experiences were: cappuccino with a corn foam at one place, and okra ice cream at another place. As soon as I saw both of those things on the menu, I had to try them! They were both very fun and very interesting. Neither one was so incredible that it changed my life or anything like that, but they were fun and different and adventurous, and I was very glad to have given them a shot. So try the weird thing! Worst case scenario: you’re disappointed and you know not to order it again in the future. Best case scenario: you find a new favorite menu item. Either way, or anything in between, at least you tried something different.
